Observations, Insights, Important Aspects

 Session 9-19-08

Observation

Seasons are mentioned a lot. The town is scared of storms. Storms are significant.

Insights
The most beautiful woman in the world is a  young woman frozen in ice, if she was not frozen she would grow old and no longer be beautiful. All women are beautiful when they are young but, when the grow old they are not beautiful anymore.
Important Aspects
A Carnival is coming and it makes the adults in the town change. A big storm is brewing far away. Jim and Will's Relationship is changing like the seasons.

Session 9-23-08

Observations

The mirrors in the maze are more than just mirrors. When Miss Foley went in she saw her younger self drowning and When Jim went in he was paralyzed with fear.

Insights
Jim uses Will for a sense of security. 3am is when the mysterious carnival is set up, Will's father is really up set about the carnival setting up at 3am, he believes that 3am is when most people die and that it is strange that they would choose that time to set up.

Important Aspects
Jim and Will watch Mr. Cooger become younger as the carousel turns backwards. After his transformation was done he was Miss Foley's nephew, Robert.  This brought up my questions about the carnival and Mr. Cooger.
Examples: How old is Mr. Cooger? If the carousel went forwards would he get older? Why does he pretend to be Robert, Miss Foley's nephew?

 Session 9-24-08

Observations
The more the book goes on the more Jim is in a daze from the carnival.

Insights
The lightning rod salesman was taken by the carnival. He was turned into the dwarf known as the Wart. Robert, Miss Foley's "nephew", made it look like Jim and Will stole from Miss Foley's House. Will has to chase Jim instead of them running together.

Important Aspects
Jim and Will chase Robert,Mr. Cooger, onto the carousel. Mr. Cooger stays on the carousel to long and becomes a 130 year old man. Will has to stop Jim from getting on the carousel.

Session 9-26-08

Observations
There is a lot of emphasis put on the eyes when someone is made younger or older. Ray Bradbury is saying that the eyes are the window to your soul and it does not change as you age. Bradbury Uses a lot of morbid words to describe things.

Insights
The carnival draws people in because people are curious and once they have been they be come obsessed with it. The father lets us know why he is so sad. He says death does not kill it only scares. People who walk around smiling are the sinners while the people who look concerned and sad are the hardworking good people. Jim - sinner, Will - hardworking good person.

Important Aspects
Mr. Dark makes Mr. Cooger come back alive.  Miss Foely can't stay away from the carnival, when she goes she is turned into a little girl. Only will can tell that Miss Foely is the young girl by looking into her eyes. We learn more about Wills dad when they talk late at night.

Session 9-29-08

Observations
Charles Holloway is smarter than the average janitor.

Insights
The ordeal with the carnival has made the bond with will and his father stronger. When the carousel makes you younger your mind remains the same.

Important Aspects
Will's father knows the evil about the carousel. Mr. Cooger and Mr. Dark are over 100 years old.

Final Session

Will Holloway
He's 13 years old who is about to turn 14. He has really blond hair. Seems to be smarter than the average 13 year old. Hes hard working. Will has strong morals and cares about right from wrong.. Slightly close minded. He thinks before he acts. His father is a janitor at the local library. He is a Christan student. He experiences major conflicts trying to keep Jim from the carnival.

Structure of the Book
The way Bradbury chooses his words shows alot of foreshadowing and symoblism. The diction of the book is unique

Why would Bradbury choose 3rd person omniscient to tell his story?
3rd person omniscient was a perfect choice. How and when Bradbury reveals what each character is thinking helps move the plot along.

Importance of the Setting
The Mr. Dark's Carnival could have come to small town. The idea of a small town helps set the mood and put major ideas together.

Irony and Symbolism
The carousel represents man's fear of death. Because the carousel takes you "away from the grave" it fascinates everyone. Will trying to keep Jim symbolizes how easy it is to fall into temptation.

Big Life Issues
The biggest them of the book is Good vs Evil and what is right and what is wrong. Will, Jim, and Mr. Holloway must work together and face Mr. Dark who is the epitome of Evil. Will wonders if he is morally good then he will be able to save Jim from the carnival. Also not to be afraid of death and smiling and laughter can save you.

Artistic Strengths and Weaknesses
The author does a good job with painting a strong picture with his words. We were able to really sense the evil and darkness of the carnival and the entire book.
